It is a careful and sympathetic character study/biography of an actual young woman named Aloise, who was born about 1900.The unsuccessful Swiss artist Aloïse Corbaz finds work at the court of the German emperor and gets infatuated. Showing frank symptoms of insanity she is hospitalized.
